Job Title: Network Cabling Technician

Location: Chicago, IL - does require some travel around Chicago 

Pay Range: $25/hr

Assignment Length: 8 weeks potential to extend

Position Overview:
The Network Cabling Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and performance of network infrastructure. This position involves the installation, maintenance, and organization of structured cabling systems to support seamless connectivity across designated locations. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of industry standards and safety protocols, along with technical expertise in network cabling and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Network Cabling Installation and Maintenance:

  2. Install, route, secure, and terminate network cables (Cat5e, Cat6, fiber optic, etc.) in walls, ceilings, conduits, and other structured cabling environments.
  3. Ensure cables are properly labeled, organized, and secured in accordance with industry standards.
  4. Mount and install network outlets, patch panels, racks, and other related hardware.
  5. Testing and Troubleshooting:

  6. Perform testing and certification of installed cables to verify performance and compliance with technical specifications.
  7. Diagnose and resolve connectivity issues within the network infrastructure.
  8. Utilize cable testing equipment to analyze and troubleshoot problems.
  9. Documentation and Compliance:

  10. Maintain accurate records of cable installations, layouts, and testing results for future reference.
  11. Adhere to project specifications, safety guidelines, and industry standards (e.g., TIA/EIA, ANSI, or BICSI standards).
  12. Conduct regular audits of cabling infrastructure to ensure ongoing compliance and optimal performance.
  13. Collaboration and Support:

  14. Work closely with IT staff and other departments to support network deployment, upgrades, and modifications.
  15. Assist with infrastructure planning and provide recommendations for improvements or upgrades to enhance network reliability.

Qualifications:

  • Technical Expertise:

  • Proficient in structured cabling installation techniques, including cable pulling, securing, terminating, and patching.
  • Experience with testing and troubleshooting tools such as cable testers, tone generators, and OTDR (for fiber).
  • Industry Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with TIA/EIA, ANSI, or BICSI standards for structured cabling.
  • Understanding of networking concepts, including Ethernet and fiber optic systems.
  • Experience:

  • Prior hands-on experience in network cabling or a related field (preferred: 2+ years).
  • Experience with installing and organizing patch panels, network racks, and conduits.
  • Soft Skills:

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive mindset.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with team members and stakeholders.

    Requirements:

    • Physical ability to work in diverse environments, including attics, crawl spaces, and elevated platforms.
    • Capability to lift and carry heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs).
    • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel between job sites if needed.
    • Certifications such as BICSI Technician, CompTIA Network+, or other relevant credentials (preferred).
