This is a regular, 100%, twelve-month, specialized faculty appointment, in the University Library. Clinical faculty are primarily engaged in librarianship and do so from the perspective of a practitioner.

The Library of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is central to the intellectual life of the university. The University Archives, a unit within the University Library, seeks a dynamic and engaging applicant to fill a non-tenure track Clinical Assistant Professor position in the renowned Sousa Archives and Center for American Music.

Reporting to the University Archivist and Head of Archival Programs, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Director of the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music in all aspects of the Center's operations. They will be expected to have a high-level knowledge of music theory, a foundational understanding of the history of American music performance practices and have demonstrated success with archival instruction and public engagement programming including the development of dynamic exhibitions both in-person and online.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the Center's selection, appraisal, and acquisition of new collections and creating and maintaining donor relationships.
  • Collaboratively and independently develops processing plans and oversees the arrangement and description of archival records, manuscripts, and artifacts related to music and fine arts.
  • Provides research, instruction, and reference services related to the Center's collections to the campus and local community, and researchers from across the country and world.
  • Participates in outreach and public engagement programming, including exhibitions, coordinating performances, and tours.
  • Works collaboratively and coordinates with University Library units in the digitization, preservation, and conservation of archival records, manuscripts, and artifacts.
  • Provides supervision of the Center's student and hourly employees, as needed.
  • Engages in professional service and research activities at an appropriate level for clinical faculty in the University of Illinois Library.

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited Master's degree in library/information science; or PhD in music history, ethnomusicology or related discipline from an accredited academic program.
  • Two years of experience working in an archival setting appraising, arranging, describing, and providing reference access to archival materials related to music or fine arts.
  • Experience working with both traditional and graphically notated music scores and parts.
  • Familiarity with current archives collection management systems such as Archon or ArchivesSpace.
  • Familiarity with DACS (Describing Archives Content Standard) and/or EAD (Encoded Archival Description).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and in team environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with public engagement programming.
  • Experience with instruction and creating exhibitions with archival materials and artifacts.
  • Experience conducting scholarly research using primary source records or artifacts.
  • Experience with digitization processes and the management of digital content using archival workflows.
  • Familiarity with preservation and/or conservation practices for libraries, archives, and museums.
  • Degree in music, musicology, ethnomusicology, or related performing arts discipline.
  • Record of participation in relevant professional organizations and/or continuing education.

The Sousa Archives and Center for American Music (SACAM) acquires and preserves significant archival records and historical artifacts in multiple media formats that document America's local and national music history and culture. SACAM arranges, describes, and makes its collections accessible in support of scholarship and publication, exhibitions, documentary productions, public engagement programs, and instruction for university, public school, and community organizations throughout Central Illinois. It provides expert advice on accepted archival and museum practices and standards to university colleagues, scholars, and the general public. Salary and Rank: This is a bargained position and as such the salary is driven by the NTFC Agreement and is commensurate with credentials and experience. The wage for this position is $73.333.33. The University of Illinois Library is committed to competitive salaries and attending to equity in compensation within the organization. The successful candidate will join the University Library as a Clinical Assistant Professor



Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 12 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
