Job Description

Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for an Early-Career Hydrogeologist and Groundwater Modeler to join our environmental sciences and engineering practice in Oakland, California . The position will have the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and practical experience to real-world situations related to contaminated site assessment and remediation, groundwater management and water supply, and contaminant fate and transport while also learning and expanding the business skills needed for a successful consulting career.

  • Creation, use, and interpretation of defensible computational models to be used as supporting tools to help project stakeholders understand:
    • Historical and future fate-and-transport of contamination, potential effectiveness of remediation technologies, and other technical issues related to addressing environmental impacts; and
    • Groundwater flow at the basin scale, project consistency with SGMA Groundwater Sustainability Plans, and other technical issues related to addressing groundwater resources management issues;
  • Design and oversight of field investigations and remediation programs, including soil, soil vapor, and groundwater sampling; drilling and contractor oversight; aquifer testing; and remediation system operation and maintenance;
  • Groundwater flow and contaminant fate and transport evaluation, including development of site/regional conceptual models for groundwater flow and subsurface fate and transport and design of 3D geologic models;
  • Application of hydrogeologic principles to characterize and assess groundwater systems, including aquifer testing and hydrogeologic data analysis;
  • Use of geostatistical methods to assess environmental datasets;
  • Data compilation and preparation of technical reports, letters, memoranda, plans, and specifications;
  • Assistance with project and task management, including planning and implementing remediation and groundwater management projects, budgeting and budget management, adherence to schedule, quality, client satisfaction, and profitability; and
  • Assistance in the development of proposals and other business development activities.
  • Bachelor's degree in geology, hydrogeology, or other environmental engineering. (required)
  • Advanced degree with emphasis on computational methods (M.S. or Ph.D.). (preferred)
  • Geologist in Training (GIT) or Engineer in Training (EIT) certification, if applicable. (preferred)
  • Experience with development of hydrogeological conceptual site models. (preferred)
  • Experience with quantitative hydrogeological assessment, including aquifer test analysis, capture zone assessment, and groundwater flow field evaluation. (preferred)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with groundwater modeling software (e.g., MODFLOW, MODPATH, MT3D-USGS) and graphical user interfaces such as GMS and Groundwater Vistas. (required)
  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing geospatial software (ArcGIS, LeapFrog, Groundwater Desktop or similar) for scientific analysis and ability to learn new software platforms. (required)
  • Strong data management and organization skills, and experience manipulating large datasets. (required)
  • Experience with quantitative statistical methods and data visualization. (preferred)
  • Experience with scientific programming languages, such as Python, R, and Fortran. (preferred)
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to environmental remediation and/or groundwater management. (preferred)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills. (required)
  • Regular field work and overnight travel. (required)
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing. (required)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)

Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified California locations below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec’s total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

  • Minimum Salary: $70,625
  • Maximum Salary: $88,280
