Job Description

Health Economics and Health Policy Faculty Search

Location:
Lebanon, NH
Open Date:
Oct 18, 2023
Description:

Dartmouth invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant professor rank to join the Susan J. and Richard M. Levy Academic Cluster in Health Care Delivery at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI) at the Geisel School of Medicine. The mission of TDI is to improve population health, reduce disparities, and create high-performing, sustainable health systems. The goal of the Levy Academic Cluster is to accelerate the transformation of U.S. health care and healthcare systems.

TDI is a national leader in developing the fields of healthcare variations and shared decision-making research. Faculty and staff have made vital contributions to policy and practice, such as influencing provisions in the Affordable Care Act, founding non-profits such as Re-Think Health, and commercializing shared decision-making platforms and tools. The research and policy contributions of TDI are driven by our underlying values of efficiency and equity, as well as a deep skepticism of the role of medical care in the production of health. As we look to address the most pressing concerns facing public health and health care right now, we welcome colleagues who challenge current paradigms of thinking – including our own.

A start-up package and access to Dartmouth’s research resources will be provided. Faculty members at TDI are members of the Ph.D. graduate program in Health Policy (). Depending on areas of expertise, successful candidates may have the opportunity for secondary/adjunct appointments in departments and interdisciplinary programs such as (but not limited to) Anthropology, Economics, Education, Government, Sociology, the African and African American Studies Program, the Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies Program, and the Native American Studies Program.

The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth is located in the neighboring towns of Hanover and Lebanon in the Upper Connecticut River Valley on the NH and VT border. Dartmouth is surrounded by a vibrant, academic, and professional community offering excellent public schools, a lively arts scene, a rural setting with great natural beauty, and delicious local produce and artisanal foods. Those who enjoy the city, Boston, New York City, and Montreal are within a few hours' drive.

Qualifications:
Candidates must have an MD, PhD, or equivalent, with a focus in health economics, health policy, or related fields. Given our strategic goal of advancing health equity and wellbeing, candidates who focus on health policy approaches to addressing structural inefficiency and inequity in the U.S. healthcare delivery system are especially encouraged to apply. Additional consideration will be given to candidates with experience or interest in collaborating with state and federal government payers to design and evaluate demonstration projects to improve health and wellbeing for rural, economically marginalized populations. The successful candidate will be expected to build a robust, extramurally-funded research program, provide research training for graduate students, and teach in classroom settings ().

TDI, Geisel School of Medicine, and Dartmouth are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive population of students, faculty, and staff. Dartmouth recently launched a new initiative, Toward Equity , that embraces shared definitions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as a foundation for our success in institutional transformation. We are especially interested in applicants who are able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds and with different identities and attributes.

Faculty can receive mentoring and training through the Inclusive Pathways for Advancement in the Academy () and Grants GPS program (), can engage with a community of their peers through Dartmouth Employee Resource Networks (), and support underrepresented students through the Provost's Fellowship (PROF) Program () and the EE Just Program ().

Application Instructions:

Applicants should upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching and mentoring statement, Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) statement, and research statement and ask three referees to provide letters of recommendation. Candidates should not include impact factors in their CV bibliographies.

Cover letter: A summary of the impact and importance of your past research and future research goals, a statement on how their efforts in all areas (research, teaching, engagement) will be of benefit to the Geisel/Dartmouth academic community, and how Dartmouth/Geisel/TDI will be of benefit to their academic program/aspirations (2p).

Teaching and Mentoring statement: Please describe your teaching and mentoring philosophy, any formal training in teaching and mentoring you have received, and your track record of teaching and mentoring students from all backgrounds, including first-generation college students, low-income students, persons from diverse racial and ethnic groups, women, the LGBTQ community, or others. Please append an NIH-style mentoring table for pre- and post-doctoral mentees using these columns: years mentored, mentee name, mentee position & institution when mentored, number of papers with mentee as first author, mentee’s grants (if relevant), and mentee’s current position (3p).

DEIB Statement: Summarize how your training and/or life experiences prepare you to advance Dartmouth’s commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as articulated in Dartmouth’s Toward Equity Institutional Strategic Plan. Propose DEIB learning goals you would like to pursue to advance your skills for teaching and mentoring across differences (1p).

Research Statement: Summarize past, current, and planned research and how your portfolio will both complement and expand TDI’s current research portfolio. Emphasize how your work informs health policy and healthcare delivery strategies to advance health equity. For early-career faculty, list potential research mentors at Dartmouth (at Geisel, Arts & Sciences, Thayer, or Tuck) and identify areas in which you anticipate mentorship needs from experts outside of Dartmouth. Also, include a job market paper or writing sample.

Application review begins on October 30, 2023. Application review will continue until both positions are filled. Offers will be made on a rolling basis with start dates anticipated between July-September 2024.
