Overview



The Mail & Package Processor position is based at the Mail Services student mail and package room at the Frist Campus Center at Princeton University.

This position will primarily deal with mail and package processing to students through package lockers and through the service window at the mail and package room. This process entails scanning or entering the packageâ™s tracking numbers and matching the recipient to one of our student records in our database. Packages are then dropped off to a locker or shelf for students to collect.

Additional duties include fulfilling tasks in the student mail and package room and fielding various client inquiries related to package and mail delivery. Critical to the position is ensuring the integrity, accuracy, safety, and confidentiality of mail managed by Mail Services. All tasks must be completed in accordance with USPS mailing standards, mail safety standards, and internal Princeton University protocols.

Position responsibilities are to accurately, expeditiously, and effectively process and sort mail and packages for students at Princeton University. This position must also be able to assist with other duties at Frist Campus Center as required.

This is a 10-month (August through May), part-time (4 hours per day, 5 days per week) position. The anticipated workdays for this position will be Tuesday â“ Saturday, however this may change as the needs of the campus community do.

This is a union position. The employee must become a member of Service Employeesâ™ International Union (SEIU) Local 175 within 30 days of employment.





Responsibilities



Student Package Handling Responsibilities:

  • Processing student packages via the package processing software.
  • Isolates suspicious incoming packages and letters using USPS "Suspicious Package Guidelines," "Suspicious Package Indicators," and "Mail Security Guide" published by USPS. Also follows internal Princeton University suspicious package protocol.
  • Records damaged incoming packages or mail.
  • Updates the package locker system database and communicates package information to students.
  • Inbounds large packages for distribution to students at the oversized package room. This room must be well organized, and packages stored in a secure manner.

Other Student Mail and Package Responsibilities:

  • Sorting and filling of student high-density mail folders in the Frist Campus Center.
  • Answers client inquiries regarding mail and parcel delivery status, as well as questions regarding operation of the package locker system.
  • Distributes checks from the Office of Finance and Treasury via the Frist Package Room window to the correct recipient. This requires a signature from each recipient.
  • Forwarding and readdressing of appropriate mail to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Removal of non-deliverable mail for shredding and recycling.
  • The processor must report any damaged or opened mail to supervisor immediately.
  • Responsibilities include client customer service, following up inquiries, problem solving, and assisting students with any mail requirements.
  • Handing out materials to students from academic departments across campus as needed.
  • Utilize the Service Now portal to always provide excellent customer service.

General Responsibilities:

  • Assists students with special requests for mail and packages.
  • Makes recommendations to improve overall departmental job performance and department efficiency.
  • Assists supervisor to facilitate completion of critical tasks and projects.
  • Must be dependable and arrive for work on time.
  • Demonstrates confidentiality and sensitivity in handling personnel matters.
  • Ability to use PC based package and mail processing software.
  • Will be required to work overtime during peak package processing periods.
  • Will be required to rotate with other University Mail Carriers at Frist in everyday functions to ensure full departmental coverage.
  • Identifying and fixing minor issues with the package lockers. Any issues that cannot be resolved should be reported to the Manager of Parcel Services and Technology or the Lead Mail Carrier.
  • Attend training courses as assigned by management.




Qualifications



Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 6 months to 1 year experience in mailing and package handling.
  • Computer literacy â“ working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds.
  • Ability to maneuver packages up to 150 lbs. using appropriate equipment and/or assistance from another carrier.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Valid driverâ™s license.
  • Essential Personnel:

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Previous mail, shipping, and handling experience.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Post Office standards.
  • Experience with package and mail processing software, especially Asset Manager.
  • Prior experience working for academic institution.
  • Prior experience in a similar environment with industry leaders such as USPS, UPS, FedEx are welcome.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Stand or walk 2 â“ 4 hours at one time.
  • Sit for up to 2 hours per day.
  • The employee is required to sit, climb, balance, kneel, and crouch.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Candidate is required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical.
