Responsibilities

SUMMARY: Substitute teachers at the North Spring Academy provide short-term classroom coverage, ensuring continuity of instruction by following substitute lesson and classroom management plans. If available in a given a month, substitute teachers must be available within hours’ notice for a set number of shifts. Candidates will participate in professional development specific to teaching and learning.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver instruction according to the lesson plans provided by the classroom teacher.
  • Implement effective behavioral systems in alignment with the teacher’s classroom management plan and the principles of trauma informed care.
  • Maintain a structured learning environment that is safe for all students to attend.
  • Be available to report to work within four hours’ notice and complete at least six shifts per month when such assignments are available.
  • Follow all facility and school specific rules and procedures.
  • Provide accommodations and services to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) as required by federal law.
  • Accurately complete attendance records online and provide feedback to the classroom teacher regarding student progress and behavior throughout the school day.
  • Collaborate with classroom paraprofessionals.
  • Supervise students in the classroom and during transitions, lunch, arrival, and dismissal.
  • Substitute teachers may be cross-trained to serve as a mental health technician (MHT) for additional PRN hours, providing student support beyond the classroom setting.
  • Implements the Balanced Day Program 2.0 and R.I.S.E principles at North Spring and collects data on behaviors, adjusting strategies as needed to maintain an environment that is conducive to learning and students’ behavioral success.
  • Responds to crisis situations and manages patient behaviors in accordance with the facility’s behavioral management program.
  • Display a high degree of professionalism in all activities and interactions with students, staff, parents, and agency personnel.
  • Serves as a role model for students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the school principal.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must complete paraprofessional training during new hire orientation.
  • Must pass a competency test assessing foundational math, reading, and writing skills administered by the school principal.
  • Upon hire, must successfully complete an online course (6 hour training) on Autism Spectrum Disorders.
  • Prior experience working with students with or without disabilities or in an educational setting is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to different classrooms, grade levels, subjects, and student needs.
  • Comfortability learning the basic use of instructional technology.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated skills in oral and written communications; excellent human relations skills.
  • Certificates, licenses and registrations required: current driver’s licensure with a good driving record, CPR certification, first aid certificate, and crisis management certification.
